Corvette C5 based lamp
This was one of our earlier floor lamp projects many years ago, where we attempted to build something unique that was created almost entirely from parts of one particular source. In this case we chose to build it from a torque tube assembly(driveshaft) of a Corvette C5. The design of this lamp has since become a template here with many automotive variations being sold to clients around the world.
The bellhousing and torque tube body were machined and welded into a shorter, more stable base with an oak cap plate. We took the internal driveshaft and CNC machined the Corvette name into it, which was a rather tricky task given the hardness and brittleness of the aluminum. We broke or cracked three shafts before finally getting it dialed it right. The shaft is lined with light diffusing polycarbonate and an LED light module that can be operated independently of the main lamp. Color changing and output modes area variable through a remote.
Up top sits the shade mount which is created from a group of welded engine timing chains, valves, and other small machined components. This in turn holds the lamp shade which is made from approximately 15 layers of 3K4HS weave carbon fiber with a cloth-pressed exterior texture to reduce glare, and a stone washed off white interior coating to provide a soft light reflection from the LED bulb.
