This is where it started.

Mecha Art started many years ago as an idea to take our passion and skills to a form of art, combining automotive and aeronautical aspects into every piece. I had been extensively working with Porsches for many years and as such had collected a plethora of parts in our time. One such Porsche, a Ruf tuned 996 Turbo, came in with a damaged engine that required a complete overhaul. The crankshaft of that engine was one of the damaged parts and ultimately became the center piece of the lamp you see below.

The forefront of this lamp was to revolve around the Porsche heritage maintaining form and function throughout the build. The crankshaft was ground and repaired to visual standards(never to go back in an engine again) and coated in a tungsten gray ceramic. Attached to a base made of solid Sapelle wood that is coated in multiple layers of lacquer, each coat being sanded and buffed until a glass-like finish appeared. We designed and shaped the base to mimic the contour of the 996 Turbo hood lines while retaining the overall profile of the Porsche crest. All trim panels, shade supports, and accents are CNC machined from stainless steel and were polished to a mirror finish. High grade stainless steel automotive fasteners were used, and in some places, others were hand cut to a specific shape to suit the look.

The carbon fiber lamp shade was a first for us here. The idea to use carbon fiber in a lamp shade came about when realizing that no off-shelf shade was going to work or compliment this lamp properly. Carbon fit the look and “prestige” that we wanted this lamp to show, so we created a mold and used over 4 yards of 3K4HS weave with engraved trim plates carrying the theme top to bottom. We also wanted a built in dimmer option and chose to use Legrande integral electronics to have multifunction on/off and dimmer options.

This lamp was built back before we really had any idea of how far Mecha Art would go, and unfortunately do not have any high quality pictures of the finished product. The lamp served as my personal desk lamp for many years before finally being donated to an avid Porsche collector.
